It’s March already! Now that we’ve dug ourselves out from this season’s whopping 102 inches of snow enough to (sometimes) get around Boston, my thoughts are turning to spring!

In the studio I’m whipping up a whole batch of small watercolors of places I love to hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I started out using small squares of cold-pressed watercolor paper and quickly discovered the perfect frame - deep like a shadow box with room for a few natural objects collected along the trail.

Some are broad, sweeping mountain views while others are more intimate vignettes of trails and woods. I love both equally: the feeling of being enveloped and protected by the trees as well as out on a windswept ridge with an impossibly infinite view.

I’m getting ready to make these the centerpiece of my displays at Dedham Open Studios in May.
